The Detroit Pistons were founded as a member of the National Basketball League in 1941; they joined the National Basketball Association in 1948 as a member of the Eastern Conference Central Division. For a time, they were recognized as the Fort Wayne Pistons, but have been known as the Detroit Pistons since 1957.

As the franchise has returned to the league's best, Pistons has equally amplified the local support. From the mid-1990s until 2001, Pistons home games were hardly ever sold out, even during the postseason. Now, regardless of playing in the league's biggest arena, the Pistons have sold out 137 uninterrupted home games.
